The Saint Paul Hotel is a historic landmark in downtown Saint Paul, offering an elegant and sophisticated experience. While praised for its location, ambiance, and service, recent reviews highlight cleanliness concerns and outdated room features. Despite its grandeur, some guests have experienced issues with maintenance and a slightly dated aesthetic.
I got the vibes that the hotel was great back in its day, and now its more like a grift. I checked under the beds and found a solid grey layer of dust, and a tangerine that had dried out to a rock hard state. Room service does not clean there, and room inspections (if they exist) do not look there. I had allergies during my stay, not to sound prissy but I'm paying to sleep here. Breakfast was of course not inclusive and more like a restaurant. Its a nitpicky detail but stood out to me that a single slice of toast was on my plate, cut in half. One slice, and a waitress bringing the bill over as we were "winding down" from our eggs, coffee, and single slice of toast. Wasn't terribly expensive but I'd have picked Dennys or something if I knew. The valet parking was new to me & neat. But there wasn't much for nightlife within walking distance. Room service came knocking and attempting to get in at around 9AM as we were snoozin. I never saw them but somehow they knew during checkout that we had the shooters & chardonay from the mini fridge. Feels like having a landlord sneak in your place while you're gone.
As an interfaith wedding rabbi and officiant, I have had the privilege of celebrating weddings in many historic hotels, and The Saint Paul Hotel is one of those rare venues that embodies the elegance and grandeur of a bygone era while delivering the service and hospitality modern couples expect. Since opening in 1910, The Saint Paul Hotel has been one of Minnesota's most iconic landmarks. Located in the heart of downtown Saint Paul overlooking Rice Park, the hotel offers a level of timeless sophistication that is increasingly difficult to find. From the moment guests enter the lobby, they are surrounded by classic architectural details, refined décor, and the sense that they are celebrating in a place with more than a century of history. What I especially appreciate is the hotel's commitment to traditional elegance. Rather than chasing trends, The Saint Paul Hotel embraces a style that feels enduring and refined. The magnificent Promenade Ballroom, with its grand scale and historic character, provides a stunning setting for both ceremonies and receptions, while the hotel's collection of event spaces allows celebrations to be tailored to gatherings both large and intimate. From a ceremony standpoint, the atmosphere is extraordinary. There is something special about gathering family and friends in a venue that has hosted generations of celebrations for more than a century. The setting creates a genuine sense of occasion while still allowing the focus to remain on the couple and the commitment they are making to one another. The result is a wedding that feels elegant, meaningful, and timeless. I also appreciate the hotel's reputation for hospitality and culinary excellence. The Saint Paul Hotel has built its legacy not only on beautiful spaces but also on exceptional service and award-winning cuisine. For couples planning a wedding weekend, the combination of luxurious accommodations, outstanding dining, and experienced event professionals creates a seamless experience for both the couple and their guests. For couples seeking a venue that combines historic grandeur, exceptional hospitality, elegant ballrooms, and one of the most distinguished addresses in Minnesota, I am delighted to recommend The Saint Paul Hotel. It is a venue where timeless elegance never goes out of style.
This hotel was luxury and service with a great price. We stayed two nights for a wedding nearby. Walkable to all of downtown St. Paul and the Mississippi River. Rooms and service were outstanding. Breakfast twice at The Drake downstairs was delicious with a creative menu. We received a group rate for a wedding. Wonderful place to stay!
Convenient and walkable to downtown St Paul is this historical, charming, clean yet dated but elegant hotel. The hotel is very well-maintained. The staff is fantastic. Other than that incident below, service would've been a 5. The rooms are really clean but time to redecorate the furniture and bathrooms. Air quality is definitely impacted by the old draperies and air filters. Small windows but great outdoor views of the river. Perfect for VIPs visiting the area if updated.
The Saint Paul Hotel is such a beautiful place to stay. I absolutely love the embodiment of history and the antique, timeless atmosphere throughout the property. It feels elegant and classic in the best way. The service was excellent from start to finish — from the concierge to valet, everyone was incredibly welcoming and helpful. The conference rooms were great as well, which is where I spent most of my stay. They were well organized, comfortable, and perfect for meetings. The rooms themselves were spotless and felt very luxurious, with thoughtful touches like great snacks and drinks and even a robe in the bathroom. Everything felt clean, polished, and well cared for. Already looking forward to my next visit — and next time I definitely plan to check out the café downstairs! P.S. you can connect to wifi and fast Netflix etc. to the in-room TVs!
The room was very nice. Reception staff (both the at valet and at front desk).left a lot to be desired. The receptionist that checked us in was VERY impersonal. As a result the first impression was not good at all and left an initial impression which was quite unwelcoming. The reality is the rest of our stay was quite nice but initial impression (which is so very important in the service industry was less than standard.
The view is nice but 1). The floors are uneven, which is bad for hip health. 2). The shower head in my room is broken. I cannot switch rooms because the hotel is full. I spoke with Gary at the front desk at 2 pm to inform him that I needed someone to fix the shower head. When I returned after 5pm it was still not fixed yet and I informed him again to send someone to fix it. He said, again that he would. I also informed Ryan that I needed the shower head fixed. He said he would send someone. It is now 6:30pm and I have received no update. 3). I informed both Gary and Abby at the front desk around 2:49pm that I needed housekeeping to go up and take out the trash as well as bring water. When I arrived back to my room after 5pm now of this had been done. I called the desk and was informed by Ryan that housekeeping had left for the day. I then returned down to the desk and spoke to Gary who informed me that that Ryan was in his way to do it himself. Ryan came up and took care of the trash. This was when I showed him the shower head issue, at which time he assured me that he would send maintenance to fix it. 6:33pm with no updates and nobody has come. Yikes!
Staff here (especially valet and doormen) make the stay exceptional. Beds are just so-so for comfort. Pillows are nice. Fun to experience the nostalgic charm. Amazing location for the Ordway, Palace and other theaters as well as the Xcel Center.
My husband and I hosted our rehearsal dinner and welcome party the night before our wedding at the St. Paul Hotel. We also had all of our out of town guests, and our entire bridal party, stay at the hotel for the wedding weekend. We cannot speak highly enough about Selin, who helped us from beginning to end, with planning and executing our rehearsal dinner and really making the process so easy and efficient. The staff the day of our event went above and beyond to make sure everything ran smoothly and Scott, the head server, helped keep everything running smoothly when we got slightly behind in itinerary to make sure we got to our welcome party on time. The food was also top notch! Our stay was wonderful and we got many compliments on the hotel, the staff, and the overall accommodations, from all the guests who stayed there. You also can’t beat the St. Paul Hotel at Christmas time. We would recommend the St. Paul Hotel to anyone who is looking to host a wedding, wedding event, or any special gathering.. Thank you to all for helping make our wedding weekend experience the very best!
Second time we have been to this hotel. Great memories with our kids from 10 years ago and now again. The staff is extremely attentive. Especially the young man who works as a barista at the coffee shop in the lobby. He was amazing. The only recommendation I have for the hotel is the valet parking gets backed up on the weekends during checkout time. By backed up, I mean, very backed up with very long wait times. Other than that, it was simply amazing.
