The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel St. Paul Downtown receives mixed reviews, with some guests praising friendly staff and convenient location, while others report issues with outdated rooms, uncomfortable beds, high parking costs, and inconsistent service. Cleanliness and amenities receive generally average ratings.
Not great. Upon check-in the room was so hot—literally was set to 80 degrees. It was immediately hot/stuffy/sticky and we quickly adjusted the thermostat to turn down the air and increase the fan speed. It does not have an individual heating/cooling unit, but does seem to be connected to the larger unit of the hotel and coming through a small vent on the wall. Needless to say, it took an extremely long time for the room to cool down—I wouldn’t say it ever got to a comfortable level, despite turning it all the way down and the fan all the way up for 12+ hours. We left the room for a few hours and upon return it was still not all that comfortable/cooler. It was not a great nights sleep. The bed was also extreamlyyyyyyyy soft and bouncy-like. Very outdated feeling and does not even remotely keep your body in alignment. The space is overall pretty outdated and rundown—like all of the carpets could use restreching and just an overall facelift. Idk, it was okay I guess, but I don’t think I’d stay here again. I think I’d just choose a different option.
I stayed at the DoubleTree and honestly had a really good experience. Before my stay, I saw some of the reviews and was not sure what to expect, but my experience ended up being the opposite in a good way. I had a nice corner room, and it was comfortable for my trip. The staff I came across were very accommodating and made me feel welcomed during my stay. Of course, the DoubleTree cookies were delicious, and that was a nice touch when checking in. I also really enjoyed the swimming pool. It was a nice place to relax, and overall I felt safe during my stay. That made a big difference for me because when you are traveling, feeling comfortable at the hotel matters just as much as the room itself. The restaurant was also very chill and had a nice relaxed feel to it. It was a good spot to sit down, unwind, and enjoy the moment without feeling rushed. Overall, I had a pleasant stay here. My experience was much better than what some of the reviews made me expect. I would just say be careful and do not always judge a place only by the reviews, because sometimes your personal experience can be completely different.
Arrived by Uber and first had trouble finding the entrance. It is NOT marked well. Check in seemed to go well and the lady working at the front desk was polite, efficient, and friendly. I hadn’t read the reviews about the coffee situation, and I was scanning the lobby area for coffee because I have to be up very early for work and don’t have transportation to go to a coffee drive through. Her reaction was really odd and defensive and she basically told me “there’s coffee in your room and a restaurant on the second floor with breakfast.” She did NOT indicate I would have to pay for that coffee and breakfast (which is so weird…am I really paying this much for a moldy room with no hand soap and I don’t get coffee?). I found that out later. Coffee in the room is sketch. When I got to my room and needed to wash my hands, I discovered there was no hand soap in the bathroom. I used the shower gel and later asked at the front desk about the soap. I was told some would be delivered. It was not, and no one communicated further. The bed is comfortable, great pillows. Room temperature was great. But the room was a little odd in that there is no place to sit except on the bed or in an extremely uncomfortable chair that looks like it came from a corporate surplus sale. There’s a space in the room where a chair was, and a side table and lamp are still there but no chair. The bathroom was decently clean but there is black mold in the shower. Some of it was obviously caulked over and starting to grow through the caulk (to the hotel management—this is NOT the way to deal with a serious health hazard). They did not caulk around the ceiling area and mold is just growing around the cracks..which means it’s behind things where you can’t see it too. The lobby area had a weird vibe with men just kind of loitering around and staring at me when I was in the space. Gave me the heebie jeebies. I booked what I thought was going to be a safe, clean hotel as a woman traveling alone on a business trip, and paid extra for that safety. If you just need a bed to crash in and you don’t care about coffee, mold, or construction workers staring at you, this is probably fine (although also wildly overpriced). If that’s not you, this might not be the place. I can’t wait to leave.
Very underwhelming stay. I booked a king room and was “upgraded” through Hilton Honors, but the upgrade was basically just an extra chair, not much of an upgrade at all. The room felt outdated and had a weird vibe. The bedding was the biggest issue: cheap pillows, layered sheets, and visible stains on the mattress sheet. That was frustrating and honestly pretty gross. The only real positive was the parking. Not the worst hotel ever, but I would recommend choosing a different option in downtown St. Paul.
DO NOT PAY FOR BREAKFAST. The breakfast is terrible and expensive. We went for mothers day and the food was poor, the service was poor, and we were poor after we got the bill! We went for breakfast because of the "food and beverage credit". This did not fully cover the cost of the meal and even if it was free it wouldn't be worth it. One example is the fitness center is right above the seating and at one point someone dropped a weight and it was so loud I thought the hotel was going to collapse. The hotel itself is nice enough. There was rust on the fixtures in the bathroom but overall it is a fine hotel. Nothing is dirty, the pool and fitness center are sufficient. The one highlight is that the staff were very friendly and accommodating. I asked for more towels and they were delivered within minutes.
Parking was as advertised. But the amenities and breakfast was terrible. No lobby coffee (probably only hotel in existence) nor vending machines for basic water. Instead they force you to get coffee from the “breakfast” area for $4 each. And a small bottle of water is $6 from the little lobby market. Instead.. staff rudely say if you want complimentary coffee it’s in the room. and water/snack options? Good luck. Staff were cold and rude. Kind of funny when the lady running the breakfast just pocketed the cash I gave her for the coffee and didn’t even ask if I wanted change. No receipt either. Definitely just stole from the hotel. Also.. the breakfast was comedic. $16? I wouldn’t pay $5 for it. Hotel was older.. definitely showing it’s age, but okay cleanliness. Room smelt like it’s been smoked in at some point but not the worst I’ve experienced. Get ready to sweat in the room though.. AC/fan was barely operational. Conclusion: Don’t stay here. Stay at any other hotel rather than this one in the st. Paul downtown area. Or.. stay outside of the downtown core and use transit to get in. Hotel was a deal and I learnt my lesson.. I should have spent the extra $ and stayed anywhere else.
All the rooms, hallways, pool area, restaurant and common spaces feel dark and dingy. Hallways smelled like a nursing home. In room bathroom badly in need of updates. On a good note the bed was comfortable and I liked the pillows. Breakfast is not provided. You could eat at the attached restaurant and chatge yo your room. Paid $40 including tip for a mediocre meal. Connecting to to the WiFi was confusing. Parking was an extra charge. Overall I wasn't impressed and won't be back if at all possible.
Our room was very clean, beds were comfortable!! The facility in general was wonderful. The main staff for our entire stay was Sandra and she was SO FANTASTIC, Polite, accommodating, and just all around amazing person who made everyone feel so welcome!!! We will definitely go back!!!!!
We stayed for a concert at the Palace Theater which is walking distance from this hotel. Parking is in the garage directly next to the hotel and if you're not paying attention you can easily miss the entrance to the garage, however it is very convenient and the elevator goes right into the hotel. We didn't have any issues with the parking at all like others seem to. The rooms are clean and comfortable and quiet. No hearing others all night long which was great. Staff was friendly from first check in to check out, absolutely no complaints at all. There is a restaurant to eat at in the hotel that has delicious burgers and fish, many choices for a varied appetite. The staff in the restaurant is friendly and helpful as well, we had a delicious dinner while we stayed. I would stay here again, and hope to see the same friendly faces next time. Definitely recommend!
The hotel was good, the rooms were spacious and clean. The only issues were the carpet in the hallways were a disaster, as if there had been flooding and they lifted and the set back down. Also, the ice machine on the 17th floor did not work and the one on the 16th floor did, but I did have small black pieces come out with the ice on my first try. Kesha, at the front desk was extra helpful and friendly. She made sure I had what I needed and helped me navigate where to go for dinner and offered other tips to be sure I enjoyed my time in the area.
